Turkish Cymbals Soundscape Water Crash – The Vibration of Water in Sound
The Jarrod Cagwin Soundscape series arose from a unique artistic collaboration: American drummer and percussionist Jarrod Cagwin – known for his work in Contemporary Music, World Music, Jazz and Film Scoring as a hybrid drummer and hand percussionist – developed this series together with Turkish Cymbals with no compromises. Each model bears the name of a natural phenomenon and tells its own sonic story. The goal: to create a natural sound tapestry that can be creatively shaped and controlled.
The Name: Water – Vibration Like Rings on Water
When a stone falls into water, concentric circles form that spread slowly and eventually fade. The Water Crash in 18”, 20” and 22” imitates exactly this physics. Extremely thin and deliberately curved, this cymbal vibrates on impact in characteristic waves through the entire bronze body – a sonic image reminiscent of a concert gong or tam-tam, in a fraction of the size and weight. Particularly notable: the bell is deliberately left raw and unlathed, while the rest of the surface is lathed – a unique sonic contrast within the same cymbal.
Sound Character: Flowing, Vibrating and Expressive
The Water Crash opens on impact in broad, flowing waves – not the short, dry crash of a conventional cymbal, but an expansive, vibrating sonic event. The raw, unlathed bell produces a dark, organic bell tone with minimal overtones, while the lathed surface adds a degree of brightness. Thanks to its extreme thinness the Water Crash is particularly sensitive to hands, mallets and brushes. In sizes 18”, 20” and 22” the vibration pattern intensifies with size – the 22” model produces the fullest and longest sound.
Applications: Contemporary, World Music, Jazz and Film Scoring
The Water Crash is the most expressive and versatile crash model in the Soundscape series. In Film Scoring and Contemporary Music it creates dramatic, flowing sound tapestries. In World Music the vibrating gong-like character bridges Eastern and Western sonic traditions. In Jazz it is an extraordinary effect instrument for drummers who want to give their playing maximum expressive power.
