Turkish Cymbals Comet Crash – Spiral with more body
On the Comet Crash by Turkish Cymbals, a continuous spiral is cut out of a paper-thin crash cymbal. The result is one of the most versatile effect cymbals in the Turkish Cymbals range – with a high, splintered sound and a shape that catches the eye straight away. Compared with the Comet Splash, it is bigger, has more body, sounds more powerful and carries further.
Sound character: high and splintered, with a metallic ring-out
The attack is short and splintery – somewhere between crash and china. Let the Comet Crash hang freely from a cymbal stand and the spiral stretches downwards, dangling like a bunch of grapes. After the stroke, it keeps swaying for a few seconds and clinks metallically, a little like a wind chime. Used as a stack, it doesn’t ring on at all: the Comet Crash rests on the lower cymbal, vibrates with it and rattles – together, the two create a new effect sound. Throughout, the B20 bronze keeps the high sound rich in overtones.
Applications: percussion, soundtrack, world music and fusion
Added to a drum kit, the Comet Crash works as an effect – for single hits that jump out of the groove, at the end of a fusion break, say. As a stack, it fits on any cymbal you like, from crash to ride. In a percussion setup, on soundtrack recordings or in world music projects, a single stroke on the freely hanging cymbal is often enough – with a stick or with your hand. It’s really at home with musicians who work with effect sounds and experimental tones. For tighter accents, reach for the smaller Comet Splash.
Craftsmanship from Istanbul – At the Best Price
Every Comet cymbal is made in the workshops of Turkish Cymbals in Istanbul, where handmade B20 bronze cymbals have been crafted for more than 25 years – by masters who learned their craft in the centuries-old Istanbul cymbal tradition. The bronze – 80% copper, 20% tin – is cast by hand, heated in traditional furnaces, hammered stroke by stroke, lathed and polished to a high gloss. Only at the very end does a machine cut the spiral precisely out of the finished cymbal. Because casting and hammering are done by hand, every Comet sounds just a little different. At Cymballand, as the official partner of Turkish Cymbals, we bring this craft straight to you – no middlemen.
