Turkish Cymbals Bee Splash – Hiss instead of wash
The Bee Splash by Turkish Cymbals is a paper-thin splash cymbal with a sound you recognise instantly: a mix of a short splash sound and the cutting tone of a china. It owes its slightly wavy edge to the series’ creative lathing process. Like every Bee cymbal, it is cast from B20 bronze and hammered by hand – available in 10" and 12".
Sound character: high, sharp and short
Thanks to its paper-thin build – much lighter than a conventional splash – the Bee Splash responds even to gentle strokes. The note starts with a high, sharp hiss and an intense attack, then ends with a short decay. No long wash, no wide ring-out – just a quick accent that cuts through the groove. Despite its low weight, the B20 bronze provides complex overtones, so the effect never sounds tinny.
Applications: percussion, soundtrack, world music and fusion
The Bee Splash is a true effect cymbal. Because it’s so thin and flexible, it’s also easy to play with your hands – in a percussion ensemble, for example, or in acoustic improvisation. In world music projects it stands next to the drums as a voice in its own right, and in soundtrack work it adds a colour you rarely hear. On the kit, it usually sits close to the hi-hat or above the ride, within easy reach. From there, it punctuates fusion grooves with short, distinctive accents where a regular splash would sound too tame. Team it up with the Bee Crash and you get a pair of effect cymbals with the same hiss – one short and high, the other dark and broader.
