Turkish Cymbals Ad Astra Hi-Hat – Big and earthy
The Ad Astra series by Turkish Cymbals takes its name from the Latin motto “Ad astra per aspera” – “Through hardship to the stars”. It was developed by Turkish drummer and cymbal designer Özgür Can Öney together with the master craftsmen of Turkish Cymbals in Istanbul, drawing on more than 20 years of stage, touring and studio experience. The result is a big, dark sound that stays controlled and has plenty of texture. Visually, the cymbals recall an Ottoman shield: a dark finish that comes out of the furnace, a natural, unlathed surface and a strikingly large bell.
Sound character: big, dark and expressive
In its 16" version, the Ad Astra Hi-Hat is two inches larger than the usual 14" hi-hat. Even so, the lighter top cymbal keeps it agile and quick to respond. Played closed, it has an earthy, warm and clearly articulated stick sound – dry and controlled. The lathed bell adds a tight, clear ping that stands out distinctly from the dark surface. Played open, it sounds like a full 16" crash: powerful, with deep sustain and plenty of wash. Closed with the pedal, it gives a clear, dynamic chick that cuts through even in a loud band.
Applications: rock, funk, fusion and progressive
The Ad Astra Hi-Hat is aimed at drummers who think beyond classic hi-hat cymbals. Played open, it shows its full power in rock and hard rock; played closed, it brings its warm, earthy articulation to funk and fusion. If you also use your hi-hat as an accent instrument, the 16" size gives you options a 14" hi-hat can’t. On top of that – in the studio and on stage alike – there’s the organic texture of the unlathed surface.
Craftsmanship from Istanbul – At the Best Price
Every Ad Astra cymbal is made in the workshops of Turkish Cymbals in Istanbul, following a tradition that goes back centuries. The B20 bronze – 80% copper, 20% tin – is cast by hand, heated in traditional furnaces and hammered by hand, stroke by stroke, by experienced master craftsmen. Only the bell is lathed; the rest of the surface is deliberately left raw and untreated. That gives every cymbal an organic, natural character that no factory can reproduce. At Cymballand, we are proud to bring this craft straight to you as the official partner of Turkish Cymbals – no middlemen, at the best price.
