Turkish Cymbals Clatter Crash – Crash meets china
The Clatter Crash by Turkish Cymbals is a paper-thin crash cymbal that combines the hissy attack of a china with a dark, fast-fading crash tone – a sound profile you rarely find in standard cymbals. That sound comes down to two hallmarks of the Clatter series: the extremely thin build and the brush-like finish on the top side, created by a particular lathing process.
Sound character: sharp attack, short and dark sustain
Hit it and it sounds like a china at first – sharp, cutting and with the series’ trademark hiss – before a dark, deep crash sound takes over and fades quickly. Both Clatter features play their part here: the paper-thin build lets the cymbal respond in a flash, even to light strokes, while the rough, textured surface – as if worked with a metal brush – keeps the sound dark and the sustain short. The 14" model sounds the driest and most direct; the bigger the cymbal, the more body and projection – and the 19" also rings out a little longer. Thanks to the B20 bronze, the sound stays layered in every size, despite the short sustain.
Applications: percussion, soundtrack, world music, jazz and fusion
The Clatter Crash is aimed at drummers and percussionists who want to add a dark, fast-decaying effect sound to their setup. On the drum kit, it joins a classic crash as an extra effect crash and – especially in fusion – adds short, cutting accents to breaks and fills, after which the mix opens up again straight away. In a quiet line-up such as a jazz trio, a light stroke is all it takes for a subtle touch of colour. It’s thin enough to play with your hands, too – both in a percussion setup and in world music projects. And when a soundtrack production needs an exotic, slightly trashy accent, the Clatter Crash delivers it without lingering. For even shorter accents with the same character, check out the Clatter Splash.
Craftsmanship from Istanbul – At the Best Price
Every Clatter cymbal comes from the workshops of Turkish Cymbals in Istanbul, where handmade B20 bronze cymbals have been crafted for more than 25 years – by masters who learned their craft in the centuries-old Istanbul cymbal tradition. The bronze – 80% copper, 20% tin – is cast by hand, heated in traditional furnaces, hammered stroke by stroke and then lathed. In the process, a special technique gives the top side its brush-like finish, which draws on the workshop’s years of experience and cannot be reproduced by machine. At Cymballand, as the official partner of Turkish Cymbals, we bring this craft straight to you – no middlemen.
