Turkish Cymbals Soundscape Snake Hi-Hat – The Rattle of the Snake in Sound
The Jarrod Cagwin Soundscape series arose from a unique artistic collaboration: American drummer and percussionist Jarrod Cagwin – known for his work in Contemporary Music, World Music, Jazz and Film Scoring as a hybrid drummer and hand percussionist – developed this series together with Turkish Cymbals with no compromises. Each model bears the name of a natural phenomenon and tells its own sonic story. The goal: to create a natural sound tapestry that can be creatively shaped and controlled.
The Name: Snake – The Controlled Rattle of the Snake
The rattle of a snake is a perfectly controlled warning signal – precisely measured, immediately audible and of unmistakable character. The Snake Hi-Hat in 12”, 13” and 14” translates this phenomenon into bronze: a specially arranged rivet configuration produces a controlled rattle sound during playing. Four rivets on top in two opposing pairs, two rivets on the inside on the bottom – each rivet precisely placed to control the vibration pattern. Completely unlathed, with raw, unlathed bells – no lathing traces, minimal overtones.
Sound Character: Dry, Rattling and Unique
The Snake Hi-Hat delivers an extremely dry tonal character with a distinctive sizzle-rattle effect. Played closed the rivet configuration produces a controlled, continuous rattle. Played open the lightweight 12”–14” models can also be used as splash or crash cymbals – a versatility that conventional hi-hats do not offer. Together with the Snake Ride a surround sizzle effect emerges, audible with the lightest touch.
Applications: Contemporary, World Music, Jazz and Film Scoring
The Snake Hi-Hat is the centrepiece of the Soundscape series for drummers and percussionists seeking unconventional rhythm instruments. In Contemporary and World Music contexts the controlled rattle creates a unique rhythmic texture. In Film Scoring and Jazz it delivers atmospheric, organic grooves. The lightweight 12” and 13” sizes are particularly suited to acoustic settings and hand percussion.
