Turkish Cymbals Ad Astra Crash – Warm and dark
The Ad Astra series by Turkish Cymbals takes its name from the Latin motto “Ad astra per aspera” – “Through hardship to the stars”. It was developed by Turkish drummer and cymbal designer Özgür Can Öney together with the master craftsmen of Turkish Cymbals in Istanbul, drawing on more than 20 years of stage, touring and studio experience. The result is a big, dark sound that stays controlled and has plenty of texture. Visually, the cymbals recall an Ottoman shield: a dark finish that comes out of the furnace, a natural, unlathed surface and a strikingly large bell.
Sound character: warm, dark and controlled
The Ad Astra Crash is not your typical crash cymbal. Its unlathed surface gives it a warm, dark sound with a quick response and controlled sustain – just right for funky grooves. It sounds neither shrill nor overpowering, but round, organic and musical. The large, lathed bell contrasts with the dark playing surface: crisp, clearly defined and cutting. Even with light strokes the cymbal responds with finesse – something by no means every crash can do.
Applications: rock, funk, fusion and nuanced playing
As a main crash, the Ad Astra Crash suits anyone who prefers a warm sound with character to an aggressive, bright crash. Whether in rock, funk or fusion, its accents are powerful but stay under control. In the studio you hear how strongly it reacts to different playing techniques: its character changes with the stick and with where you strike it. Together with the Ad Astra Ride and the Crash-Ride from the same series, you get a cymbal setup that sounds all of a piece.
Craftsmanship from Istanbul – At the Best Price
Every Ad Astra cymbal is made in the workshops of Turkish Cymbals in Istanbul, following a tradition that goes back centuries. The B20 bronze – 80% copper, 20% tin – is cast by hand, heated in traditional furnaces and hammered by hand, stroke by stroke, by experienced master craftsmen. Only the bell is lathed; the rest of the surface is deliberately left raw and untreated. That gives every cymbal an organic, natural character that no factory can reproduce. At Cymballand, we are proud to bring this craft straight to you as the official partner of Turkish Cymbals – no middlemen, at the best price.
