Turkish Cymbals Ad Astra Ride – Clear and controlled
The Ad Astra series by Turkish Cymbals takes its name from the Latin motto “Ad astra per aspera” – “Through hardship to the stars”. It was developed by Turkish drummer and cymbal designer Özgür Can Öney together with the master craftsmen of Turkish Cymbals in Istanbul, drawing on more than 20 years of stage, touring and studio experience. The result is a big, dark sound that stays controlled and has plenty of texture. Visually, the cymbals recall an Ottoman shield: a dark finish that comes out of the furnace, a natural, unlathed surface and a strikingly large bell.
Sound character: clear, controlled and expressive
The Ad Astra Ride is the core cymbal of the series – more than 20 years of Özgür Can Öney’s stage and studio experience have gone into it. It offers very clear articulation and just enough wash to sound alive without flooding the mix. Not too wet, not too dry – a precise ride sound with character, live and in the studio. The large 6" bell delivers a crisp, clear ping the band can lock onto in any style. The unlathed surface produces an organic stick sound that responds sensitively to different playing techniques.
Applications: hard rock, funk, jazz and studio production
The Ad Astra Ride is a versatile ride cymbal with a clear character. Even in loud hard rock it has enough power and volume. Play funk grooves on the precise bell and you get clear rhythmic accents. Played more quietly, in jazz for example, it reveals an open, organic sound that comes from the natural, untreated surface. In the studio, its fine response to sticks and technique pays off: depending on your choice of stick and where you hit it, its character changes noticeably. Together with the Ad Astra Crash-Ride and the Ad Astra Crash, it makes up a set with a consistent sound.
Craftsmanship from Istanbul – At the Best Price
Every Ad Astra cymbal is made in the workshops of Turkish Cymbals in Istanbul, following a tradition that goes back centuries. The B20 bronze – 80% copper, 20% tin – is cast by hand, heated in traditional furnaces and hammered by hand, stroke by stroke, by experienced master craftsmen. Only the bell is lathed; the rest of the surface is deliberately left raw and untreated. That gives every cymbal an organic, natural character that no factory can reproduce. At Cymballand, we are proud to bring this craft straight to you as the official partner of Turkish Cymbals – no middlemen, at the best price.
