Turkish Cymbals John Blackwell Signature Hi-Hat – Sharp chick, mismatched pair
The John Blackwell Signature Hi-Hat was made for John Blackwell Jr. to his own specifications: a Medium-Thin pair of hi-hat cymbals in which the top and bottom are built completely differently. The thin top cymbal goes through a special lathing process that leaves its surface rough and brush-like; the heavier bottom cymbal is conventionally lathed and has a Traditional finish. The bells of both cymbals stay raw.
Sound character: crisp when closed, dark when open
The chick comes through sharp and precise. Even with dense sixteenths, the hi-hat responds quickly. The stick sound on the closed hi-hat is dry, crisp and clearly articulated, with a little bite. Opened up, it sounds short, dark and washy.
Applications: funk, jazz-fusion, soul, R'n'B and contemporary
In funk, the John Blackwell Signature Hi-Hat carries syncopated patterns around the ghost notes on the snare, and you can play intricate jazz-fusion lines on it, too. In soul and R'n'B, the chick clearly marks two and four. You’ll find the same brush-like surface on the NJG Hi-Hat. With the John Blackwell Signature Ride and the John Blackwell Signature China, you can build a setup entirely from the series.
Craftsmanship from Istanbul – At the Best Price
Every cymbal in the John Blackwell Signature series is made in the workshops of Turkish Cymbals in Istanbul, where handmade B20 bronze cymbals have been crafted for more than 25 years. The bronze – 80% copper, 20% tin – is cast by hand, heated in traditional furnaces and hammered by experienced master craftsmen, stroke by stroke. After that, each model is given its own surface, from brilliant-polished to Traditional – but the bell stays unlathed on every model in the series. Because casting and hammering are done by hand, each cymbal sounds just a little different. At Cymballand, as the official partner of Turkish Cymbals, we bring this craft straight to you – no middlemen.
