Turkish Cymbals Ad Astra China-Ride – Earthy depth
The Ad Astra series by Turkish Cymbals takes its name from the Latin motto “Ad astra per aspera” – “Through hardship to the stars”. It was developed by Turkish drummer and cymbal designer Özgür Can Öney together with the master craftsmen of Turkish Cymbals in Istanbul, drawing on more than 20 years of stage, touring and studio experience. The result is a big, dark sound that stays controlled and has plenty of texture. Visually, the cymbals recall an Ottoman shield: a dark finish that comes out of the furnace, a natural, unlathed surface and a strikingly large bell.
Sound character: earthy, dark, with long sustain
The Ad Astra China-Ride in 20" has a rare sonic personality. Intensive hammering gives the edge a shallow curve, and the result is an earthy, slightly washy sound with a dark, long sustain. Drummers describe it as a deep, resonant “Ahhh…” that slowly opens up and fills the room. This sustain lends itself to swells – cymbal rolls that build up – and to accents that are meant to ring on. At the same time, this china cymbal can also be played as a ride – from earthy rock grooves to finely accented jazz.
Applications: rock, jazz, fusion and experimental playing
You won’t find this dark character in conventional chinas. In rock, the Ad Astra China-Ride produces massive crashes with an almost cinematic effect; played as a ride, it brings an unusually warm, open tone to jazz and fusion. In experimental and progressive styles it extends the tonal palette beyond the classic cymbal types. A rare cymbal that covers everything from the rock crash to the jazz ride.
Craftsmanship from Istanbul – At the Best Price
Every Ad Astra cymbal is made in the workshops of Turkish Cymbals in Istanbul, following a tradition that goes back centuries. The B20 bronze – 80% copper, 20% tin – is cast by hand, heated in traditional furnaces and hammered by hand thousands of times by experienced master craftsmen. Only the bell is lathed; the rest of the surface is deliberately left raw and untreated. That gives every cymbal an organic, natural character that no factory can reproduce. At Cymballand, we are proud to bring this craft straight to you as the official partner of Turkish Cymbals – no middlemen, at the best price.
